As our members are fully aware, the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19, brings an increased threat to senior living communities. We are especially concerned about older adults who are at a higher risk from infection as well as healthcare personnel and other caregivers who are offering essential service and care for those infected, even at the risk of their own health. To date, we have no reports of spread to any PAHSA members. However, PAHSA invites all its members to unite in prayer for people and senior living organizations that have already been impacted, for pro-active leadership to limit the spread and for the health and well being of the residents we serve and for resilience and courage for staff who serve on our behalf, and for calm, wisdom and mutual respect to prevail in our greater communities. Most of all, we pray for God’s healing in body and soul and that the Holy Spirit strengthens our collective goodwill and generosity to care for and support one another. LeadingAge and its state chapters, as well as state health departments and other health care agencies, are providing reliable information and resources to best assist us to protect their communities and mitigate the impact of this virus. Most already have infectious disease protocols and strong health and safety practices in place. However, now is the time to review and renews these practices and take measures to prevent or delay the spread of the coronavirus, should an outbreak occur. Questions have arisen about plans for the 2020 Spring Conference and Annual Meeting to be held in La Jolla, California, April 26-28, 2020. Please be assured that we are in regular contact with our host, HumanGood reviewing the situation and possible scenarios. Every effort will be made for prudent and timely decisions in case of unfolding challenges in health protection and travel. However, at this time, the current and long-standing plans for the Conference are still in place. Please pray for God’s guidance and direction in all that is done. In times like these, we are reminded that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…” (Ps. 46: 1-2). Thank you for praying for our ministry together and those we serve. I share with you a prayer written by our friend and colleague, Jill Duffield, editor of The Presbyterian Outlook. Prayer for all impacted by COVID-19 Original publication Lord, in your mercy you healed those suffering in body, mind or spirit. We cry out to you now on behalf of those infected by the coronavirus. Heal the sick and bind up the broken-hearted who grieve those felled by this illness. As both infection and fear spread, we ask for courage and protection for healthcare workers risking their own well-being for the sake of others. We pray wisdom for government officials and those in decision-making positions. May they rightly discern what needs to be done to treat those already infected and prevent others from falling sick. We know there are those in quarantine, afraid they might be exposed to illness, wondering when they will return to their normal lives, anxious about what might happen next. Comfort them with your peace that passes understanding and grant them patience during this liminal and frightening season. Lord of all, we are intimately connected to one another no matter where we reside on the earth, and so we plead for healing, good healthcare, relief and wholeness in all the places where this virus has made its appearance. May our collective care, effort, resources and love bring an end to this epidemic. Amen.
